Principles of Macroeconomics / Unit 16 MAC 1510 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The Demographic Transition
Captions available
The idea
Development changes population growth in two stages. Clean water, sanitation and vaccination cut death rates first, which speeds population growth. Birth rates fall later as incomes rise, which slows it again.
In practice
So population growth rises before it falls, and the rise comes from lives saved.
Where people slip
A country in the first stage looks Malthusian and is mid-transition.
