Medical Terminology / Unit 1   MedTerm 0013 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Rule: Prefixes Join Without a Combining Vowel

Captions available

The idea

A prefix attaches directly to the rest of the term, with no combining vowel between them.

In practice

Peri plus cardi slash o plus itis gives pericarditis.

Where people slip

Some prefixes drop their own final vowel before a vowel, as endo becomes end in endarterectomy.
