Keeping an Inventory of AI Use
The idea
NIST's Govern one point six asks for mechanisms to inventory AI systems, resourced according to risk; the method's documents offer one way to keep that inventory.
In practice
Step one: for each Gold thing, check the AI row of its traceability matrix, which lists the models, drafting tools and prompts that use it. Step two: collect the AI rows across all Gold things into one list, grouped by AI system. Step three: add every feature that has passed the AI feature gate, with the things it reads and writes. Step four: compare the two sources, and investigate any AI system that appears in one but not the other. Step five: review the list at each object review, and resource the oversight of each system by the risk of the things it touches.
Where people slip
An inventory built from purchasing records lists the tools an organization bought; one built from the matrices lists where AI actually touches decisions. NIST's subcategory is satisfied better by the second, because risk lives where the AI meets the thing.
