History of the United States II / Unit 7 USH2 0926 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Building the Canal
Captions available
The idea
Construction began in May nineteen oh four and moved more than one hundred seventy million cubic yards of earth before the canal opened in nineteen fourteen.
In practice
Swamps drained to destroy the mosquitoes that carried yellow fever and malaria.
Where people slip
Walter Reed's work on mosquitoes made that possible. The Americans built locks, not the sea-level canal on which France had failed.
