The idea

In nineteen twelve Roosevelt ran on the Progressive, or Bull Moose, ticket against Taft and the Democrat Woodrow Wilson, splitting the Republican vote.

In practice

Wilson winning with forty-two percent of the popular vote.

Where people slip

Digital History gives Roosevelt twenty-seven percent, still a record for a third-party candidate, and Taft twenty-three. Together they outpolled Wilson.
