Catt and Paul

The idea

Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul sought the same goal and are often remembered as one movement, but their methods were opposite. Catt led the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the larger and older organisation, and worked within politics. Paul led the National Woman's Party in marches, pickets and hunger strikes, and her pickets stood outside the White House even in wartime. The anchor says that while they used different strategies, their combined efforts won the vote.

In practice

A delegation lobbying senators politely, and a picket line outside the White House in wartime.

Where people slip

The confusion to avoid is crediting the amendment to one side. Ask how each applied pressure: from inside the political system or from outside it. The anchor's verdict is that both mattered, and that combination is a lesson later movements in this course repeat.
