Push: Terror in the South

Captions available

The idea

Tuskegee Institute researchers recorded thirty-five hundred lynchings and other race-motivated killings in the South from eighteen sixty-five to nineteen hundred.

In practice

The Tuskegee Institute and the NAACP publishing lists of every reported lynching.

Where people slip

The Klan's formal dismantling in the late eighteen seventies did not end the violence. Terror was a reason to leave.
