Captions available
The idea
Working families crowded into tenements, and parts of Manhattan's Lower East Side packed up to eight hundred people onto a single acre.
In practice
A family of adults and children sharing, at best, a two-bedroom tenement flat.
Where people slip
By one nineteen hundred estimate Manhattan alone had nearly fifty thousand tenement houses. Sanitation lagged far behind.
