The Great Society and Its Critics
The idea
The Great Society of entry 1967 was the widest reach of the liberal tradition in this course: Medicare and Medicaid, federal aid to schools and a new immigration law in a single year. Entry 2008 records the anchor's figure that the share of Americans in poverty fell by nearly half by the time Johnson left office, and the Yawp's finding that later presidents left most of the programmes in place.
In practice
Community Action's maximum feasible participation, the programme the Yawp calls the most controversial.
Where people slip
Entry 2008 records the critics' case: Community Action fraught during its few years, and Richard Nixon campaigning in nineteen sixty-eight on eliminating wasteful antipoverty programmes. The confusion to avoid is taking either verdict alone. The course's position, in entry 2008, is that the Great Society cut poverty and built lasting programmes and did not end poverty, and entry 2252 records that alarm at it helped build the New Right.
