Santa Barbara and the Cuyahoga

Captions available

The idea

In nineteen sixty-nine an oil spill devastated the coast near Santa Barbara, California, and that summer the Cuyahoga River, choked with industrial pollutants, caught fire, the Yawp records.

In practice

A river on fire, and oil washing onto California beaches.

Where people slip

Americans had had enough, the Yawp says, and the protest came the next spring.
