History of the United States II / Unit 2   USH2 0188 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Dispossession by Law

Captions available

The idea

Hispanic landowners in the Southwest were displaced by force, and by legal processes designed to leave them penniless.

In practice

Sunday Laws forbidding traditional cultural practices, and Greaser Laws jailing unemployed Mexican Americans as vagrants.

Where people slip

The Greaser Laws, like the Black codes, used vagrancy to control a population. Treaty citizenship gave little protection in court.
