History of the United States II / Unit 13 USH2 1845 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Two Arcs
The idea
Unit twelve opened the civil rights movement's legal arc with Thurgood Marshall's fund and Chambers v. Florida in nineteen forty. This unit carries that arc's victories in order, Mendez in nineteen forty-seven, Sweatt in nineteen fifty, Brown and Hernandez in nineteen fifty-four, Brown II in nineteen fifty-five, and opens the second arc, the mass movement of boycotts and protest, with Emmett Till and Montgomery in nineteen fifty-five.
In practice
Two timelines laid side by side, one of courtrooms and one of streets.
Where people slip
The anchor begins its account of the movement with Brown. The course begins earlier and says so, because the anchor's own chapters place the wartime campaigns and Mendez before it. The misreading dates the movement's start to Rosa Parks. The Yawp says decades of African American litigation, local agitation against inequality and liberal justices made Brown possible.
