The idea
In nineteen forty-two the Pittsburgh Courier, then the largest African American newspaper, began the Double V campaign.
In practice
Two victories demanded at once: over Nazism and fascism abroad and over racial inequality at home, as the Yawp puts it.
Where people slip
Unit eleven showed the New Deal's exclusions. Double V turned the war's own language against them.
