The idea

Pioneer wives had no right to sell property, seek a divorce in court, sit on juries or vote, yet their labour kept the farm running.

In practice

A typical farm wife in nineteen hundred giving nine hours a day to chores.

Where people slip

Two more hours went to barn and animal work. The law gave her almost no rights over the farm her work sustained.
