September, Not October

The idea

The crash is remembered as a day in October, but the decline began earlier. The market peaked in September nineteen twenty-nine, and from September to November it fell from sixty-four billion dollars to about thirty billion, more than half. Black Thursday, October twenty-fourth, and Black Tuesday, October twenty-ninth, were the panic within that decline, not its beginning. The anchor treats the sequence as the thing students most often get wrong.

In practice

A line falling from its September peak, with two steep drops marked in late October.

Where people slip

The confusion to avoid is dating the collapse to one day. A market that had already begun to fall in September turned into a panic in October, and the panic turned a decline into a crash. Knowing the order matters, because it shows that the crash was the climax of weakness already under way, not a bolt from a clear sky.
