The idea
On May seventh, nineteen fifteen, a German submarine sank the British liner Lusitania, killing nearly twelve hundred civilians.
In practice
One hundred twenty-eight of the dead were Americans, travelling on a British ship.
Where people slip
The Yawp says the attack raised public anger and the desire for war. The submarine struck without warning, against international law.
