Captions available

The idea

Charles the Second established the Royal African Company in sixteen sixty. It held a monopoly on the slave trade to English colonies.

In practice

One hundred twenty-five thousand captives purchased between sixteen seventy-two and seventeen thirteen, twenty percent dying in the Middle Passage.

Where people slip

The monopoly ended in sixteen eighty-nine, after which many more English merchants entered and the volume rose sharply.
