History of the United States I / Unit 17   USH1 2424 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Two Versions of One Speech

Captions available

The idea

Sojourner Truth's Akron speech of eighteen fifty-one survives in two published versions, and the famous refrain belongs to the later one, published in eighteen sixty-three.

In practice

Marius Robinson reporting a convention, and Frances Dana Gage writing during a war over slavery.

Where people slip

Unit 13 covers both. Neither is dishonest and they cannot both be verbatim, so the course records and attributes both.
