Captions available

The idea

Frederick Douglass argued for a piecemeal approach, insisting his support for women's suffrage was sincere but that Black men's franchise was most urgent.

In practice

His claim that the government of this country loves women, but the negro is loathed.

Where people slip

He held that the negro needs suffrage to protect his life and property. Lucy Stone and Henry Browne Blackwell accepted this.
