History of the United States I / Unit 15   USH1 2119 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Blockade

Captions available

The idea

Lincoln called for seventy-five thousand volunteers, hoped for a ninety-day campaign, and in April declared a naval blockade of the southern coast.

In practice

Militias sending more men than were requested, and the Confederacy turning away tens of thousands.

Where people slip

The anchor notes the blockade tacitly recognized the Confederacy while providing legal cover for British and French trade, since you can only blockade a country.
