Jefferson Davis of Mississippi became provisional president and Alexander Stephens of Georgia vice president, pending elections in the spring and autumn of eighteen sixty-one.

Where people slip
The Confederacy also claimed Missouri and Kentucky, where no secession ordinance ever passed. The star count on its flag overstates the membership.
