The idea

John Brown was born in Connecticut in eighteen hundred and held that slavery was an unacceptable evil that must be purged by violence.

In practice

Brown telling abolitionists his plan, some funding it, and Frederick Douglass refusing.

Where people slip

Douglass found it suicidal. On October sixteenth, eighteen fifty-nine, Brown and eighteen armed men, Black and White, took the unguarded federal armoury at Harpers Ferry.
