History of the United States I / Unit 14   USH1 1994 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Why a Cane and Not a Duel

Captions available

The idea

Given Butler's age, Brooks sought satisfaction on his behalf, and the choice of weapon carried a meaning that a modern reader will miss.

In practice

A duel offered only between gentlemen, and a caning administered to an inferior.

Where people slip

By choosing a caning, Brooks signalled that Sumner was not a gentleman. Southerners sent hundreds of replacement canes, and Massachusetts re-elected Sumner.
