The Republican Party
Captions available
The idea
The act created the Republican Party out of northern Whigs, anti-Nebraska Democrats, Free-Soilers and abolitionists, and the Free-Soil Party ceased to exist.
In practice
A party committed to stopping slavery's expansion and opposing the Slave Power.
Where people slip
It was solidly northern from the start, and that is a description of its electoral base rather than a criticism of its principles.
