The idea

Democrats ran Lewis Cass on popular sovereignty, Whigs ran Zachary Taylor, a slaveholder and war hero who stayed silent on slavery, and Free-Soilers ran Van Buren.

In practice

Northern campaigns promising free territories across all parties in the same year.

Where people slip

Southern campaigns in that same election promised protection for slavery, which is how a national party ran two contradictory campaigns at once.
