History of the United States I / Unit 13   USH1 1849 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Promiscuous Assemblies

Captions available

The idea

In eighteen thirty-seven the Grimké sisters toured publicly, speaking on immediate abolition to what were called promiscuous assemblies, meaning mixed-gender audiences.

In practice

Respectable society scandalised, since women lecturing to men was unheard of.

Where people slip

Garrison endorsed them and other abolitionists opposed them, and the reaction pushed women's proper sphere to the front of public debate.
