The American Temperance Society formed in eighteen twenty-six, and by the early eighteen thirties thousands of similar societies had appeared across the country.

Members pledging at first to avoid hard liquor and nothing more.
Where people slip
By eighteen thirty-six most societies advocated total abstinence and no longer tolerated beer or wine. That position is teetotalism.
