Brook Farm and New Harmony
Captions available
The idea
George Ripley founded Brook Farm at West Roxbury in eighteen forty-one, combining manual labour with intellectual pursuits, and it never exceeded one hundred members.
In practice
Robert Owen buying the Rappites' twenty-thousand-acre parcel in eighteen twenty-five and renaming it New Harmony.
Where people slip
Owen drew on faith in human reason rather than religion. Fire destroyed Brook Farm's main building in eighteen forty-six and it closed.
