The idea

The Middle Ages ran from Rome's fall in four seventy-six to the late fourteenth century. Under feudalism lords owned the land, knights served militarily, and serfs were about sixty percent of western Europe's population.

In practice

People retreating into walled cities such as Carcassonne, fearing Vikings, Mongols, Arabs and Magyars.

Where people slip

Serfs were technically free but effectively bound to the land.
