History of the United States I / Unit 12 USH1 1706 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Enslaved Women and the Same Ideology
The idea
For White slaveholders the male-dominated household protected gendered divisions and norms. For enslaved women the same system exposed them to brutality and frequent sexual domination. The labour demanded of enslaved women made the idealised domestic role impossible, and slaveholders placed them in fields performing traditionally male work, which reflected nothing of the gentleness and delicacy reserved for White women. Their roles as daughters, wives and mothers received no patriarchal protection at all.
In practice
One ideology producing opposite effects on two groups of women in the same household.
Where people slip
The cult of White womanhood required Black women's labour and their rape in order to function, and the anchor states both halves. A course that teaches the southern lady without the enslaved woman is teaching an advertisement. This is the strongest twin available for the exam's gender theme, and both halves come from the same pages.
