The 1811 Louisiana Rising

Captions available

The idea

In January eighteen eleven, in Louisiana's sugar parishes, perhaps five hundred enslaved people took up arms under Charles Deslondes, a mixed-race slave driver.

In practice

A rising inspired by Haiti, killing Andry's son, burning three plantations and marching toward New Orleans.

Where people slip

Deslondes was mutilated and burned. Other rebels were beheaded and their heads placed on pikes along the Mississippi.
