History of the United States I / Unit 12   USH1 1660 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Ginning and Baling

Captions available

The idea

After weighing at the gin house, enslaved people cared for animals and performed other chores, and often tended their own gardens and livestock afterwards.

In practice

Cotton pressed into bales of four hundred to five hundred pounds and wrapped in burlap.

Where people slip

The gardens were not a concession. They supplemented rations the plantation did not supply.
