Mexico Abolishes Slavery

Captions available

The idea

The Mexican government abolished slavery in eighteen twenty-nine, and tried to accommodate the Texas settlers by maintaining the fiction that their enslaved workers were indentured servants.

In practice

A legal pretence extended to keep American slaveholders in place.

Where people slip

The slaveholders distrusted Mexican intentions and wanted Texas to become a new United States slave state.
