The Log Cabin Insult

Captions available

The idea

The log cabin was not Harrison's idea and it was not his origin. Democrats mocked him, declaring that if you gave him a barrel of hard cider and settled a pension of two thousand a year on him, he would sit the remainder of his days in his log cabin. Harrison was from a privileged Virginia family. The Whigs took the insult, adopted it as their emblem, and rebranded him as a man of the people.

In practice

Tippecanoe Clubs distributing whiskey from the E. C. Booz Company, which introduced booze into American vernacular.

Where people slip

A student who remembers Harrison as a frontier everyman has learned the campaign's message rather than its history, which is exactly Tocqueville's point arriving in the same chapter. The log cabin is the first great example in American politics of an attack absorbed and worn as identity, and the technique has never gone out of use.
