History of the United States I / Unit 10 USH1 1402 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Culture as Cause
The idea
The anchor's own learning objective for this section asks students to describe how depictions of Native peoples in popular culture helped lead to Native removal. Not accompanied removal, not reflected it. Helped lead to it. Novels and paintings that presented Native peoples as doomed, feral or already vanishing prepared a reading public to accept a policy of expulsion as the recognition of something inevitable.
In practice
A romance and a touring gallery doing work that no statute could do.
Where people slip
This is why the exam's culture theme is not decoration. Popular culture here is a cause in the chain, and the anchor places Cooper and Catlin inside a chapter about legislation and court cases for that reason. Teach them as part of the mechanism of removal, not as background colour, and the culture band and the conflict band answer each other.
