The Working Men's Party

Captions available

The idea

Thomas Skidmore organised the Working Men's Party, and his eighteen twenty-nine treatise called for the abolition of inheritance and the redistribution of property.

In practice

A demand to end imprisonment for debt, under which a debtor was jailed and his tools seized.

Where people slip

Skidmore's vision extended to all. Women and men, whatever their race, should vote and receive property.
