History of the United States I / Unit 8   USH1 1071 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Jay's Treaty

Captions available

The idea

John Jay was sent to Britain in seventeen ninety-four to secure compensation for captured ships, British withdrawal from the Northwest posts, and American trade in the West Indies.

In practice

The posts turned over, free trade in the West Indies, and a commission on colonial debts.

Where people slip

He got most of what he was sent for, and the treaty was bitterly unpopular anyway.
