The idea
Chat tools usually separate messages into roles: a system message that sets the assistant's overall behaviour, and user and assistant messages that carry the conversation.
In practice
The DAIR.AI guide notes that the system message is optional but helps set behaviour, such as answering as a careful policy analyst.
Where people slip
A role sets tone and approach; it does not give the model expertise it lacks.
