Bracketing
Captions available
The idea
Bracketing is the researcher's deliberate suspension of their own opinions about a phenomenon so the participants' descriptions can be heard on their own terms.
In practice
A researcher recording their assumptions in advance in order to set them aside.
Where people slip
Bracketing is attempted, not achieved. Appraisal asks how the researcher went about it, not whether they claim to have succeeded.
