Evidence-Based Practice / Unit 4   EBP 0453 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Overarching Rule

Captions available

The idea

The overarching rule of critical appraisal is to determine the validity, reliability and applicability of studies, so they can be synthesised and translated into practice.

In practice

Three questions asked of every study: is it sound, is it consistent, does it reach these patients.

Where people slip

Applicability is the one most often dropped. A valid and reliable study about someone else is still about someone else.
