Evidence-Based Practice / Unit 18 EBP 2573 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Building EBP Into a Curriculum
The idea
The technique: secure administrative buy-in first, since the resources follow it; assess the educators before the students, including their informatics skills; level the expectations across programmes so learning builds; teach the three question types apart early; and run the group work with the elements that make it teach rather than merely meet.
In practice
A school building evidence-based practice into its curriculum. Administrative support secured first, and with it database access, computers and protected faculty time. Faculty assessed on four plain questions — evidence-based practice knowledge, computer skills, database skills, and whether librarians with those skills are available — with their own teaching examined for content that rests on tradition. Informatics gaps addressed before any course is redesigned. Expectations levelled across bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes so each builds on the last. Students taught early to distinguish an EBP question from a research question and a quality improvement question, starting from how they already weigh evidence in ordinary decisions. Journal clubs run with the paper circulated in advance, established appraisal criteria, an effective leader, and three small groups taking one appraisal criterion each.
Where people slip
Assess the educators before the students. The chapter locates the problem with the teachers — their knowledge, their informatics skills, and whether their own content is supported or inherited — and a reform that begins with the students has begun in the easiest place rather than the right one.
