Evidence-Based Practice / Unit 8 EBP 1142 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Planning a Guideline Implementation
The idea
The technique: assess readiness before anything else; adapt the recommendation to local context without changing what it recommends; assess barriers and facilitators; then select a bundle from the named uptake elements rather than a single intervention, and plan the evaluation of uptake and impact at the same time as the rollout.
In practice
An appraised guideline taken to a unit. Readiness assessed: supports present, culture receptive, administrative backing confirmed. The recommendation adapted to the equipment on hand. Barriers named. A bundle chosen — the action built into the workflow, skills-building sessions for staff, a reminder at the decision point, and a checklist with its items linked to times. Uptake and outcome measures defined before the start, with the feedback returning to the unit while the change is under way.
Where people slip
Plan the evaluation first, not last. A rollout with no baseline cannot afterwards show whether it changed anything, and the sustaining stage will have nothing to argue from.
