The Rehabilitation Ideal

The idea
The rehabilitation ideal treats crime as partly repairable: sentences should return safer, abler citizens — an aim nobler than warehousing and open to its own abuse.
In practice
A sentence built on literacy and treatment reads differently from time served. The worry arrives with it: improvement imposed is paternalism with a warden.
