The idea
The byproduct reply: satisfaction from helping presupposes a prior desire that the other person do well — the feeling follows the caring, never replaces it.
In practice
Only someone who already wanted the stranger rescued feels joy at the rescue. The joy is evidence of concern, not its secret motive.
