English Literature / Unit 1 ENL 0009 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Meter: Stress, Foot and Line
Captions available
The idea
Meter is the rhythm and measure of a line of poetry. English meter counts stressed and unstressed syllables, grouped into feet, the small repeating units of a line. A line is named by its foot and the number of feet, so iambic pentameter means five iambs.
In practice
Kind of foot, then number of feet.
Where people slip
English meter counts stress, not length.
