Francis Bacon's Essays
Captions available
The idea
Francis Bacon, philosopher, statesman and jurist, published his first book of Essays in fifteen ninety-seven and expanded it later. His essays are short, aphoristic and quotable; "Of Truth" opens, "What is truth? said jesting Pilate, and would not stay for an answer."
In practice
Short, pithy, quotable prose.
Where people slip
Bacon's essay is compressed, not chatty.
