Ben Jonson on Shakespeare

Captions available

The idea

In his poem for the First Folio, Ben Jonson praised Shakespeare as "Sweet Swan of Avon" and declared, "He was not of an age but for all time!" Jonson noted that Shakespeare had "small Latin and less Greek," yet outshone Kyd and "Marlowe's mighty line."

In practice

Not of an age, but for all time.

Where people slip

Jonson praises and qualifies at once.
