Troilus and Criseyde and the Retraction
Captions available
The idea
Troilus and Criseyde, in rhyme royal, tells of lovers parted in the Trojan War; Shakespeare later based Troilus and Cressida on it. At the end of the Tales, Chaucer's Retraction asks forgiveness for any of his writings that tend toward sin, after the reader has already read them.
In practice
A tragic love story; an apology placed last.
Where people slip
The anchor notes the Retraction's timing.
