Serial Publication and the Three-Volume Novel
Captions available
The idea
Most Victorian novels first appeared in monthly or weekly instalments; the success of Dickens's Pickwick Papers in eighteen thirty-six established the serial. Books came out in three volumes for the circulating libraries, a format that disappeared after eighteen ninety-four.
In practice
Instalments, then three volumes.
