The idea

In "Dover Beach," published in eighteen sixty-seven, the speaker hears in the waves "The eternal note of sadness." "The Sea of Faith" once full now makes a "long, withdrawing roar." He asks, "Ah, love, let us be true / To one another!" for the world is "a darkling plain."

In practice

A retreating sea of faith.

Where people slip

Love is the only refuge offered.
